Staff Services Manager I: writing the SOQ
The first supervisory rung of the analyst series. SSM Is supervise analysts and support staff, own a program area's deliverables, and translate management direction into their unit's work — the SOQ shifts from 'what I analyzed' to 'how I led'.
What the work typically involves
- Supervising, training, and evaluating analytical staff
- Planning and assigning the unit's work; managing deadlines
- Owning a program area and reporting on it upward
- Handling performance issues and staff development
- Representing the unit to leadership and other departments
What the SOQ prompts usually probe
Prompts vary by posting — always answer the actual questions — but for this classification they tend to test the same ground:
- People leadership with specifics: team size, what you delegated, how you developed someone
- A performance or conflict situation you handled directly
- Delivering through others — a deadline met by organizing the unit, not by doing it all yourself
- Judgment calls: priorities set, tradeoffs made, and how you explained them
Prompt patterns to be ready for
“Describe your experience supervising or leading the work of others.”
“Describe a time you addressed a performance or conflict issue on your team.”
“Describe your experience planning and organizing work to meet deadlines.”
The tip that matters most
Formal supervision isn't required to score — lead-person, project-lead, and training roles count if you show the leadership behaviors concretely.
