Management Services Technician: writing the SOQ
A paraprofessional analyst classification — a common bridge between clerical work and the SSA/AGPA analyst track. MSTs handle the concrete pieces of analytical work: gathering data, maintaining tracking systems, preparing routine reports, and supporting budgets, contracts, or personnel transactions.
What the work typically involves
- Collecting and compiling data for analysts and managers
- Maintaining spreadsheets, logs, and tracking systems
- Preparing routine reports, summaries, and correspondence
- Processing budget, contract, or personnel documents
- Researching questions in manuals, regulations, and prior files
What the SOQ prompts usually probe
Prompts vary by posting — always answer the actual questions — but for this classification they tend to test the same ground:
- Data work: spreadsheets you built or maintained, and what decisions they fed
- Following complex written procedures correctly without close supervision
- Times you spotted something off in the numbers and chased it down
- Supporting analysts or managers — anticipating what they needed
Prompt patterns to be ready for
“Describe your experience collecting, organizing, and summarizing data.”
“Describe your experience using Excel or similar tools in your work.”
“Describe a time you had to learn a new procedure or system quickly.”
The tip that matters most
MST SOQs are where you prove you're ready for the analyst track — frame clerical experience analytically: what you noticed, what you compared, what you concluded.
