SOQ Format: Rules That Get Applications Rejected

5 min read

Formatting is a compliance test

Before anyone scores your writing, someone checks whether you followed the instructions. Agencies state this openly: applications that do not follow the SOQ instructions will not be considered. The formatting rules are the first filter, and they are the cheapest one to pass.

The rules postings commonly set

  • Font and size — 12-point Arial is the most common requirement; some ask for Times New Roman.
  • Page limit — often one or two pages, single-spaced. A ceiling, not a target.
  • Margins — one inch is the default expectation when stated.
  • A required title — many postings want the document titled 'Statement of Qualifications' with your name.
  • Numbered responses — answer each prompt in order, numbered to match.
  • Every prompt answered — skipping one usually voids the whole SOQ.

When the posting is silent

If a posting lists prompts but no formatting rules, use 12-point Arial, one-inch margins, single spacing, and stay within two pages. Nobody has ever been rejected for being easy to read.

Length: fill the need, not the limit

A two-page limit does not mean two pages are expected. Reviewers reward density — every sentence carrying a fact, an action, or a result. Padding to reach the limit dilutes your strongest material and makes the evidence harder to find.
